At the heart of RevGenius is the mission to build up and enable the revenue leaders of tomorrow. These people will often get promoted through the ranks from early days in sales development and full-cycle sales roles.
One of the earliest clubs we created was Outbound Club - with Tom Slocum at the helm. With his leadership, he’s fostered a community of healthy competition and camaraderie that we hope for our entire community to exemplify.
His contributions have helped countless reps meet and exceed their goals—empowering them to get farther in their careers and personal, financial goals.
Below is our interview with Tom:
Introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us who you are and what you are currently focused on.
Hey! I’m Tom.
I live in Arizona with my wife and two kids. We have a 9-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, who are my whole world.
My sales career started for me about a decade ago when I was an 18-year-old car salesman. From there, I found sales was something I loved. I ended up finding my place about five years ago in the Sales Development world. Currently, I’m helping deploy and scale a Sales Development team for Milestone, an SEO company that helps brands organize and amplify their digital information.
I’m also a huge Tampa Bay sports fan, particularly the Tampa Bay Bucs. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and personal development. Right now, I’m focused on launching my own consulting company by 2021. Stay tuned on that.
How did your journey lead you to be a revenue leader?
I have always had a passion for helping people.
When I got into the sales world, I knew my path was leading. I wanted to master my craft, teach others, and help them grow. I was always doing more than my role required of me, stepping up where I could— to be a strong #2 by taking care of #1. Over time, I started gaining more responsibilities and learning how to teach others my tactics.
But, I struggled to find my place in the Sales/SaaS world for a bit. Gaining leadership roles and understanding sales politics was tough for me.
However, about five years ago, I found a company willing to invest in my growth and success. I worked with a fantastic leader who pushed me and helped me develop beyond my wildest imagination. He taught me what it meant to be a servant leader and the true meaning behind helping others reach their potential. I was then given my first shot at being a revenue leader and haven’t looked back since.
What drew you to working in sales development, specifically?
Honestly, I just found it to be my niche—I’m really good at it.
I enjoy “cold” calling, prospecting, and the challenges of booking a meeting with someone. It drew me in quickly. When you get that “yes,” knowing you just called someone out of the blue and captured their attention, it’s a rush to me. Plus, the skills I have learned and the growth I’ve experienced have been invaluable. I just knew I found my place and wanted to help others experience the joy of Sales Development.
What would you say your personal superpower is?
I am not the best at what I do by a longshot, but I am the hardest working. “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” My grandfather instilled that in me growing up. I put in the work every day, constantly trying to get better.
That’s what has led me to have a successful sales career. I work hard and am determined to give 110% in everything I do. I make up for the talent I lack by being consistent and showing up. No one can outwork me, let alone do it consistently.
Why did you start RevGenius’ Outbound Club?
It actually started by accident.
One day some SDRs and AE members were interested in competing to see who could book the most meetings on a Friday afternoon. It ended up being a huge success.
So many members enjoyed the camaraderie and support it presented. Being in this new remote world, it presented an opportunity to help. So I reached out to Jared, and boom! The Outbound Club was born.
I then started hosting a call blitz on Friday’s for everyone to finish their week strong. Now just a few months later, we have grown to over 300+ members. We are bringing the benefits of being on the sales floor to a remote world.
Why should other sales professionals join RevGenius?
There are so many reasons. I am a part of multiple communities, but RG has genuinely drawn me in and is a place to call home. We have over 8k+ members, and it grows by the minute.
Why should you join? Simply put: VALUE!
Where else can you learn, grow, and network for $0? So many members are willing to offer a helping hand at the drop of a hat. You will learn more than you can imagine.
There truly is something for everyone. You get out of it, what you put into it. If you want to grow, develop, and have access to people who can help, then join RevGenius.
